What happened in 2008? Last year at Finance Blog we reviewed the NZ perspective of the 2007-08 year.

However because of the global melt down we are first reviewing what occurred in America that affected the world and so many Kiwis.

Throughout the year we kept a finance journal, and the reading of quotes makes quite astounding reading ; if you had been away for a year you might actually not believe some of the headlines AND what some respected top line people said in earlier months of 2008.

Here we go…

“there is zero confidence, what is going on here?”

“yesterday the market lost 17 billion dollars alone”

“535,000 people lose their jobs in one month”

These are some of voices of the what has been called the Global 08 crash. The year of gigantic losses and instability

January 08 the Dow Jones was trading at 13000, oil traded above $100 for the first time, and there were signs of a recession in the air between dismal mortgage and retail figures. The federal reserve described the financial outlook as “ Unusually uncertain” however just a few weeks later in January it appeared that the Bush administration had also underestimated the gravity of their situation.

Bush said “ this report indicates that our economy is structurally sound for the long term and that we are dealing with uncertainties in the short term” (wow!)

However home owners continued to default on their mortgages in record numbers it was clear that early in 2008 that trouble was brewing. The credit and mortgage crisis had started to cripple banks, one by one the pillars of the US financial world begun to crumble and fall, in March 2008 it was Bear Sterns, September it was Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, banking giant Merryl Lynch, then September 15th , 2008, it was Lehman brothers that declared bankruptcy – a bank that withstood two world wars yet could not weather the mortgage storm of 08’.

This was to be the biggest bankruptcy in US history to date. It was also to be known as the day that the bottom dropped out of the worlds financial centre.

Tom Lynch was quoted as to say” i wonder if the federal government had anything to do with the lowering of the standards in the first place to allow everyone to have the American dream which is now turning into the American nightmare” Once the bleeding had begun it was hard to stop. But an even bigger catastrophe lay ahead…

AIG the worlds largest insurer was going under, the US government decided that they were too big to fail and scrambled to pass a lobby a 700 USD billion bail out plan. However due to politics the house failed to pass this bill and markets around the world tanked to new lows.

The Dow Jones lost 777 point that day the worst single day in history. For weeks after Wall street was in a state of panic….levels of fear I have never sen before,…. there is zero confidence in this market… yesterday the market lost 700 billion dollars alone….are just some of the quotes of traders.

By the close of October 2008 investors lost an estimated grand total of 16.2 trillion US dollars people dreaded opening up their 401 pay statements and were glued to market tickers.

This roller coaster ride was showing no signs of letting up with Oil at a record high of 145 USD per barrel to plummet to a little below 40 dollars within 2008. 535, 000 people lost their jobs in the month of November in the United States.

Finance jobs.co.nz as well as everyone wanted to know when it was going to end, with December 08 many analysts now predicted the bottom was close, however the audience is very pessimistic.

By mid December the 500 point swings were gone, the Dow was trading around the 8000 mark, stability was returning to the markets but not the economy.

US Auto makers were just days away from disaster when the US government stepped in with a 17 billion loan.

And the year ended with one the of the biggest financial scandals of all time with the former NASDAQ chairman Bernard Madoff made off with allegedly 50 billion dollars of investors money through a ponzi scam leaving investors reeling.

Now the US takes a breath and looks to 2009 and to a more settled year, a year of hopeful growth with a new head of government and an end to economic mess. The year ends as it started with a uncertain feel to the air.
